CE Community

Attend 3 Forest Grove community meetings

Community meetings provide local context for permaculture practice as well as offering opportunities to connect with others who share your goals and aspirations.  There are many options for fulfilling this requirement.  A few of them are listed below:

For each meeting, summarize the meeting activities in the report forms listed below.

Meeting Report 1 (due October 1)

1. What meeting did you attend? My family and I volunteered at The Institute for Human Services (IHS) to provide meal service to those who struggle on the streets and anyone in crisis.

2. What was the date of the meeting? The date I volunteered at IHS was on September 18.

3. Why did you choose to attend this meeting? How does this meeting connect to the class? (give some context for your choices). I chose to attend this because it was a perfect opportunity to help out my community. In a time like this, many people in Hawaii are struggling to make ends meet due to COVID-19. This connects to my class as I’m serving the common good and getting involved with my community.

4. Describe the activities that went on during the meeting you attended: We helped prepare meals by making numerous amount of to-go plates for people to grab-and-go. After, we helped clean up the kitchen so that it’s clean for the next time they have to prepare meals again.

5. How did you contribute to the meeting? I contributed by helping prepare meals for those in need and cleaning up afterward. Specifically, I was the rice scooper and put 1-2 scoops of rice on each plate when preparing the meals.

Meeting Report 2 (due November 1)

1. What meeting did you attend? I voted in the 2020 U.S election.

2. What was the date of the meeting? I mailed my ballot on October 17.

3. Why did you choose to attend this meeting? How does this meeting connect to the class? (give some context for your choices). I chose to vote in the 2020 U.S. election because every single vote counts in a time we are in right now. This meeting (vote) connects to the class because I’m getting involved with the community/America and voting is serving the common good (CE guidelines).

4. Describe the activities that went on during the meeting you attended: I filled out my ballot, signed it, and then went to the nearest ballot drop box so that my vote would officially count.

5. How did you contribute to the meeting? I voted.

Meeting Report 3 (due December 1)

1. What meeting did you attend? I attended a zoom meeting that involved discussing problems in our community and tried to come with some solutions.

2. What was the date of the meeting? The date of this meeting was on November 4, 2020.

3. Why did you choose to attend this meeting? How does this meeting connect to the class? (give some context for your choices). I chose to attend this meeting because I got to hear the many problems that are occurring and affecting our community. This meeting is connected to the class because I’m getting more involved in the community by hearing out the problems that occur within the community and then help come up with solutions to get rid of the problem.

4. Describe the activities that went on during the meeting you attended: We brought up problems that were occurring in our community and tried to come up with solutions together to help our community. Some problems mentioned were homelessness, affordable housing, and abandoned vehicles. We talked about how housing costs are so high in Hawaii which affects homelessness and that more affordable housing needs to be made. Also, there are many vehicles that are being abandoned on the side of roads in Hawaii. This makes it dangerous for people passing by as it’s a safety hazard. It puts an economic burden on Hawaii as it costs a lot of money to remove them. A solution we came up with was to have stricter laws for people who abandon their vehicles.

5. How did you contribute to the meeting? I contributed to this meeting by mentioning a problem that wasn’t yet mentioned. I talked about how Ko Olina has banned public lagoons so that tourists can enjoy their time in Hawaii and be isolated. Also, I helped with coming up with solutions for other problems that were mentioned in this meeting.
